1643 World Map Melchior Tavernier

This French world map owes its stylistic distinction to the two large banners surrounding the twin hemispheres which convey the equivalent of degrees in French and German miles. Although Australia is not yet depicted here, the major coast lines incorporate up-to-date revisions. The corners contain small scenes of the four elements as represented by an eagle (Air), a salamander (Fire), land animals (Earth) and a whale (Water). Large celestial circles are centered around the hemispheres at the top and bottom of the map.
