Great Wall: How It First Appeared on Maps

Centuries ago, Europeans pictured the Great Wall of China in geographic imagination. Maps did not portray it as a recognizable feature until much later. Travelers’ reports, missionary accounts, and descriptions of the Chinese empire circulated gradually through the sixteenth century. Translating those accounts into cartography proved difficult.

The breakthrough came in 1584, when the Flemish cartographer Abraham Ortelius published his Chinae olim Sinarum regionis, nova descriptiom,“A new description of the region of China, formerly called Sina.” It was the earliest printed European map devoted specifically to China and, more importantly for the history of cartography, the first known European map to depict the Great Wall.

The map is therefore much more than an attractive Renaissance engraving. It marks a moment when information about China obtained through Portuguese and Jesuit networks was transformed into a geographical image for European readers.

Before the Wall appeared on European maps

The absence of the Great Wall from earlier European maps should not be interpreted as evidence that Europeans knew nothing about it.

European knowledge of East Asia had a long and complicated history. Medieval travelers such as Marco Polo supplied Europeans with descriptions of China, while Ptolemaic geography provided an inherited framework for representing eastern Asia. Yet these sources offered an imperfect picture of China’s interior.

By the sixteenth century, Portuguese voyages and the establishment of European commercial and missionary contacts with China began to change the situation. The Portuguese reached the Chinese coast in the early 1500s, and a Jesuit mission was established in China in 1577. Information could now move in the opposite direction: instead of Europeans relying principally on ancient authorities and travelers’ tales, cartographers could draw upon reports based on much more recent observations.

Descriptions of the Great Wall began circulating in Europe during this period. João de Barros discussed it in his Asia, published in 1563, while Gaspar da Cruz provided an early description in his 1559 Treatise of China and the Adjoining Regions. Other accounts followed.

But there was an important distinction between knowing about a geographical feature and mapping it.

The Great Wall had to make the transition from textual description to cartographic symbol.

Luis Jorge de Barbuda and the information behind Ortelius’s map

Ortelius did not travel to China. His map was instead the product of the extraordinary information networks of the late sixteenth century.

The principal source was a manuscript map produced by the Portuguese cartographer Luis Jorge de Barbuda, whose name was Latinized as Ludovicus Georgius. Barbuda’s map drew upon information being gathered by Portuguese missionaries in China. The manuscript eventually reached Ortelius through the Spanish scholar and royal chaplain Benito Arias Montanus.

This chain of transmission is significant.

A Chinese geographical reality was being observed and described locally; information was gathered through the Portuguese missionary network; a manuscript map was produced; that manuscript traveled to Spain; and from there its geographical information reached Antwerp, where Ortelius incorporated it into one of the most influential atlases of the Renaissance.

The resulting map was, by contemporary European standards, remarkably sophisticated. Indeed, when published it was considered the most accurate printed representation of China yet available in Europe.

The 1584 map and the Great Wall

Ortelius’s map appeared in the Additamentum III to his famous Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the landmark atlas first published in 1570.

The Great Wall is shown along China’s northern frontier as a long, conspicuous barrier separating China from the territories associated with the “Tartars”. The European term commonly used for various peoples of Inner and Central Asia.

The accompanying Latin inscription reads:

Murus quadringentarum leucarum inter montium crepidines a Rege Chinæ contra Tartarorum ab hac parte eruptiones extructus.

In translation, the inscription states that a wall of four hundred leagues had been constructed between the edges of the mountains by the King of China against incursions by the Tartars.

This is a fascinating piece of cartographic evidence because the map communicates two ideas simultaneously.

First, the Wall is presented as a physical geographical feature.

Second, it is given a political and military purpose. It is not simply a line on the landscape; it is the defensive boundary of the Chinese state.

That interpretation would become deeply embedded in European representations of China.

An impressive wall, but a very inaccurate one

There is an obvious irony in calling Ortelius’s map the first to depict the Great Wall.

The Wall is shown prominently, but its actual geographical dimensions are badly misunderstood.

The inscription gives its length as approximately 400 leagues, and the cartographic representation suggests an almost continuous defensive barrier along China’s northern frontier. In reality, the Great Wall is not a single structure constructed at one time. It consists of walls, fortifications, trenches, passes, towers, and other defensive works constructed and rebuilt during different periods and under different regimes.

The best-known surviving sections near Beijing largely date from the Ming dynasty, centuries after the earliest walls were constructed.

Nor does the Wall run continuously across the entire northern frontier in the manner suggested by Ortelius’s generalized depiction.

The map’s error is particularly interesting because it demonstrates a fundamental principle of historical cartography: a map can be historically important without being geographically accurate by modern standards.

Ortelius was not simply copying a measured survey. He was converting fragmentary information into a coherent geographical model.

The Great Wall became a powerful cartographic symbol precisely because it could be generalized so effectively.

More than a wall: Ortelius’s China

The Great Wall is perhaps the feature that attracts modern viewers, but it is only one element of this remarkable map.

China is presented within a highly decorative Renaissance composition. Mountains fill much of the interior, rivers and settlements provide additional geographical information, and the surrounding seas contain sailing ships.

The map is also oriented unusually for a modern reader: west is effectively placed at the top, giving the map an appearance quite different from the north-up convention familiar today. Japan is rendered in a distinctive curved configuration influenced by Portuguese cartographic traditions.

Ortelius also included illustrations of peoples and objects associated with the region. Among the most curious are the so-called wind wagons; sail-powered land vehicles that fascinated Europeans. Tents or yurts appear across the northern and central Asian landscape, reinforcing the map’s visual distinction between China and the peoples beyond its frontier.

The result is part map, part ethnographic picture, and part geographical encyclopedia.

That combination was characteristic of Renaissance atlas cartography.

Why the map matters in the history of cartography

The importance of Ortelius’s 1584 China map lies not merely in its “first” status.

It represents a fundamental change in the way Europeans could visualize China.

Earlier European maps often depended heavily upon inherited geographical traditions. Ortelius’s map incorporated information obtained through contemporary contacts with Asia. The map therefore represents the beginning of a new phase in European cartography: China was increasingly being represented through recently acquired geographical intelligence rather than exclusively through classical and medieval authorities.

It also illustrates how cartographic knowledge traveled.

There was no single European explorer who simply went to China, surveyed the country, and returned with a finished map. Instead, geographical knowledge moved through a network of sailors, merchants, missionaries, scholars, manuscript mapmakers, publishers, and engravers.

The Great Wall’s appearance on Ortelius’s map is a product of that network.

From Ortelius to later maps of China

Ortelius’s representation remained influential for decades. His map continued to serve as a standard European image of the Chinese interior until much more detailed Jesuit cartography became available in the seventeenth century.

One of the major successors was the Italian Jesuit Martino Martini, whose Novus Atlas Sinensis appeared in 1655. Martini’s maps represented a dramatic advance in geographical accuracy and detail.

By then, European cartographers had access to considerably better information about China’s provinces, rivers, cities, roads, and administrative geography.

But the conceptual breakthrough had already occurred.

Ortelius had demonstrated that China could be represented as a coherent mapped territory—and that one of its most remarkable physical and political features could be incorporated into European cartography.

The Great Wall enters the European imagination

There is consequently something especially appropriate about finding the Great Wall on Ortelius’s 1584 map.

The wall itself was ancient, but its European cartographic identity was new.

On the map, a complicated collection of defensive structures becomes a single visual statement: China is a powerful, bounded civilization protected along its northern frontier. That simplified image would prove enormously influential.

The map also reminds us that historical maps should be read as documents of knowledge as much as geography. Ortelius’s Wall is misplaced, generalized, and dramatically simplified. Yet it records what European scholars believed they knew about China in 1584.

And that makes it invaluable.

The first European cartographic appearance of the Great Wall was not a precise survey. It was something more interesting: the moment when scattered reports about one of the world’s most extraordinary monuments were transformed into a permanent graphic symbol.

For students of cartographic history, Ortelius’s 1584 map is therefore a landmark—not because it got the Great Wall exactly right, but because it was the first European printed map to make the Wall visible.
