The Forgotten Map Colorist: How Hand-Colored Maps Were Made

Before the advent of color printing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and digital publishing, maps owed much of their beauty, and often their usefulness, to the steady hands of a skilled artisan known as map colorist. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, countless printed maps left the press in simple black ink. Only after printing where they transformed into the colorful works collectors admire today. Every boundary, coastline, and decorative cartouche was painstakingly painted by hand.

For the map colorists who performed this work, the job demanded patience, consistency, and remarkable precision. Although their names rarely appeared alongside famous cartographers such as John Arrowsmith, Sidney Hall, or Heinrich Berghaus, these anonymous artisans played a critical role in the production of commercial atlases, nautical charts, and government surveys. Their work bridged the gap between printing technology and artistry, giving maps both practical clarity and visual appeal.

Beginning the Day

A typical day for a 19th-century map colorist began in a workshop connected to a publishing house or engraving business. In major publishing centers such as London, Paris, Amsterdam, Leipzig, or Philadelphia, dozens of workers might occupy long wooden tables illuminated by large windows. Good natural light was essential, since artificial lighting from candles or oil lamps distorted colors and strained the eyes.

Stacks of freshly printed maps waited beside each workstation. These sheets had already passed through the engraving and printing process, usually from copperplate engravings early in the century and increasingly from steel engravings or lithographs later on.

Unlike artists creating original paintings, map colorists rarely exercised personal creativity. Instead, they followed detailed color guides prepared by publishers. Every copy of a particular map had to look nearly identical.

Learning the Trade

Most map colorists entered the profession through apprenticeships. Young workers learned to prepare pigments, care for brushes, mix washes, and apply color without obscuring delicate engraved lines.

Training emphasized three fundamental skills:

  • Applying even watercolor washes.
  • Staying precisely within engraved boundaries.
  • Reproducing identical colors over hundreds or thousands of copies.

Unlike easel painters, speed mattered almost as much as accuracy. Commercial publishers depended upon efficient production schedules, especially during the publication of new atlases.

Many colorists became extraordinarily fast through repetition. After coloring hundreds of maps showing the counties of England or the states of the United States, they could recognize boundaries almost instinctively.

The Materials of the Trade

The map colorist’s workstation was surprisingly simple.

Typical equipment included:

  • Fine sable-hair brushes.
  • Watercolor pigments.
  • Ceramic or porcelain mixing trays.
  • Small containers of clean water.
  • Cloth rags for drying brushes.
  • Color reference samples.
  • Finished printed map sheets.

The pigments themselves often consisted of traditional mineral and plant-derived colors:

  • Prussian Blue
  • Vermilion
  • Gamboge yellow
  • Carmine
  • Indigo
  • Sap Green
  • Burnt Sienna

These pigments were mixed with water and sometimes gum arabic to improve flow and adhesion.

Because the engraved lines remained visible beneath transparent watercolor washes, colorists used extremely diluted paint. Heavy paint would obscure place names and fine hachures used to represent relief.

Assembly-Line Efficiency

Many large publishers developed surprisingly sophisticated workflows.

Rather than assigning one worker to complete an entire map, workshops often divided labor into specialized stages.

One worker might paint all blue water features.

Another specialized in pink political boundaries.

A third applied yellow.

Another completed green territories.

This assembly-line approach ensured greater consistency while increasing production speed. Since each worker repeatedly applied only one or two colors, mistakes became less frequent.

Publishers sometimes inserted small coded marks into the printed plate indicating which regions received particular colors. These marks were removed or hidden during coloring.

More Than Decoration

Modern readers sometimes assume the colors on antique maps were merely decorative.

In reality, color served several practical purposes.

Political boundaries became immediately distinguishable.

Colonial possessions stood apart from neighboring territories.

Transportation routes could be followed more easily.

Geological formations appeared in contrasting shades.

Military campaigns often used colored overlays to distinguish opposing forces.

In educational atlases, color helped students quickly identify countries, provinces, or administrative districts.

Without hand coloring, many engraved maps would have appeared confusing masses of black lines.

Long Hours and Eye Strain

Although the finished products appear elegant today, the work itself could be physically demanding.

Colorists spent long hours leaning over flat worktables. Maintaining a steady hand required excellent posture, and poor lighting quickly caused eye fatigue.

Many workshops operated six days each week.

During busy publishing seasons, particularly before Christmas or the release of new atlases, workers sometimes completed hundreds of sheets daily.

Even a small mistake could ruin an expensive engraving.

If watercolor crossed an engraved boundary, correction was difficult. Some errors could be scraped away gently after drying, but many spoiled sheets were simply discarded.

Women’s Important Role

By the early nineteenth century, women constituted a substantial portion of the map-coloring workforce.

Publishers often employed women because the work required careful attention to detail and because they could be hired for lower wages than male engravers or printers.

In London especially, many family-owned engraving businesses relied heavily upon female colorists.

Entire households sometimes participated in coloring operations. Maps were even distributed to workers’ homes, where family members colored sheets that were later returned to publishers for inspection.

Although rarely credited individually, these women helped produce some of the finest atlases of the Victorian era.

The Economics of Coloring

Hand coloring significantly increased the cost of a printed map.

Publishers commonly offered two versions:

  • Uncolored maps at a lower price.
  • Hand-colored editions at a premium.

Collectors, schools, libraries, and wealthy travelers frequently preferred colored editions because they were easier to read and visually impressive.

Some deluxe atlases featured particularly elaborate coloring with gold highlights or multiple shading techniques that required additional labor.

Consequently, surviving hand-colored maps often command substantially higher prices among collectors today than identical uncolored impressions.

The Beginning of the End

By the second half of the nineteenth century, advances in printing technology gradually reduced the need for manual coloring.

Chromolithography allowed multiple colors to be printed mechanically.

Improved lithographic techniques produced accurate color registration.

Steam-powered presses dramatically increased production speed.

By the late nineteenth century, publishers increasingly abandoned labor-intensive hand coloring except for luxury editions or specialized government work.

Thousands of skilled map colorists gradually disappeared from the publishing industry as industrial printing became more economical.

Appreciating Their Legacy Today

Modern collectors occasionally wonder whether the color on an antique map is original or added later.

Original period coloring often exhibits subtle variations in brushwork, slight differences between copies, and transparent watercolor that follows engraved boundaries with remarkable precision.

Later coloring, particularly twentieth-century additions intended to increase market value, frequently appears brighter, less consistent, or extends beyond the original linework.

For historians, original hand coloring provides valuable evidence about publishing practices, political geography, and the economics of map production. Even when identical engraved plates survive, differences in coloring can reveal changing national borders, revised editions, or distinct publishers’ preferences.

The Invisible Artists Behind Every Atlas

The history of cartography often celebrates explorers, surveyors, engravers, and famous mapmakers. Yet the map colorists who transformed monochrome engravings into vibrant visual documents remain largely anonymous. Their work required a unique blend of artistic sensitivity, technical discipline, and industrial efficiency. Working with little recognition, they added the colors that helped generations of students, travelers, merchants, and statesmen interpret the world.

Today, when we admire a beautifully hand-colored nineteenth-century atlas, it is worth remembering that its vivid reds, blues, greens, and yellows were not produced by a printing press. They were applied one careful brushstroke at a time by skilled artisans whose names have mostly been forgotten. Their craftsmanship survives in every surviving map, reminding us that cartography has always been as much an art as it is a science.
