John Ogilby: The Story of Britain’s First Great Road Mapmaker

When we think of seventeenth-century cartographers, names such as Willem Blaeu, Joan Blaeu, Nicolas Sanson, and John Speed usually come to mind. These men produced magnificent maps of countries, continents, cities, and the wider world. But one of the most interesting British mapmakers of the seventeenth century was considerably less conventional, and that is John Ogilby.

John Ogilby (1600–1676) did not begin his career as a cartographer at all. He was a dancing master, theater impresario, translator, publisher, printer, surveyor, and eventually royal cosmographer. His career was remarkably varied, and repeatedly interrupted by financial disasters, war, shipwreck, and fire.

Yet in the final years of his life, John Ogilby produced one of the most innovative works in the history of British cartography: Britannia, published in 1675. Rather than attempting to depict Britain as a conventional geographical map, Ogilby mapped the country from the perspective of the traveler. His hundred strip maps traced the principal roads of England and Wales, recording distances, towns, bridges, hills, rivers, crossroads, ferries, and other features encountered along the journey.

In doing so, Ogilby effectively created Britain’s first systematic road atlas and established a form of route mapping that has surprising parallels with modern road atlases, transit maps, and even digital navigation.

From Dancing Master to Cartographer

John Ogilby was born on 17 November 1600, probably at Kirriemuir in Angus, Scotland, although details of his early life are unusually uncertain. By his teenage years he had entered the world of professional dancing, eventually becoming a dancing master. The accident left John Ogilby lame, ending his dance career.

This might have ended the prospects of a less resourceful man. John Ogilby, however, continually reinvented himself.

In the 1630s he went to Ireland, where he became associated with Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford. Ogilby became tutor to Wentworth’s family and established the Werburgh Street theater in Dublin. The authorities appointed Ogilby Master of the Revels in Ireland, granting him responsibility for licensing theatrical performances.

The Irish Rebellion of 1641 and the subsequent political upheavals destroyed this phase of his career. Ogilby returned to England and reinvented himself again, this time as a translator and publisher.

He produced lavish editions of classical works, including translations of Virgil and Homer. His publications were often ambitious, heavily illustrated productions requiring considerable financial investment. This experience would later prove extremely useful: Ogilby understood not only geography but also the practical business of producing large, expensive illustrated books.

His transformation into a cartographer therefore did not occur in isolation. It grew out of his earlier experience as a publisher, editor, designer, and organizer of large-scale projects.

The Great Fire and the Beginning of a Cartographic Career

The event that most directly connected Ogilby with surveying was the Great Fire of London in 1666.

The fire destroyed enormous areas of the City of London, including John Ogilby’s home and printing stock. But the disaster also created a demand for detailed surveying. The rebuilding of London required accurate information about streets, properties, boundaries, and surviving structures.

Ogilby became involved in surveying the city and worked alongside other important figures in Restoration London, including the surveyor Robert Hooke.

This experience was crucial.

Ogilby, who worked as a publisher, found geography captivating. Now he was working with measured space. Surveying required a different approach from the compilation of traditional maps: distances had to be established, locations recorded, and the physical landscape translated into a systematic graphic representation.

His later cartographic projects would combine these two worlds, the practical surveyor and the ambitious publisher.

In 1670–71 Ogilby was appointed King’s Cosmographer, and in 1674 he was described as His Majesty’s Cosmographer and Geographic Printer.

It was at precisely this stage that his great road-map project reached fruition.

Britannia: A New Kind of Road Map

Ogilby’s Britannia, Volume the First, or, an Illustration of the Kingdom of England and Dominion of Wales appeared in 1675.

Its purpose was radically different from that of a conventional atlas.

Instead of presenting England and Wales as a single geographical surface, Ogilby presented them as a network of journeys.

The atlas contained 100 engraved strip maps depicting approximately 7,500 miles of roads.

This was a brilliant response to a practical problem.

A conventional map attempts to show geographical relationships in two dimensions. But for a traveler, the most important question is often simpler:

What will I encounter as I travel from here to there?

Ogilby’s maps answer precisely that question.

The road becomes the organizing principle of the map. Towns, villages, bridges, rivers, hills, woods, ferries, crossroads, and other features are arranged along the route. The traveler follows the road from one end of the strip to the other.

The result looks strange to modern eyes because north is not consistently at the top. The orientation changes as necessary to keep the route conveniently arranged on the sheet. The map is therefore not primarily a representation of geographic space; it is a representation of movement through space.

That distinction is central to understanding Ogilby’s achievement.

The most distinctive feature of Britannia is its use of the strip map.

Each route is stretched across a long, narrow cartographic strip. When the road changes direction, the cartographic representation changes direction with it. The route may be straightened or geometrically adjusted to fit the available space.

This produces a form of linear cartogram.

Geographic accuracy was therefore selective. Ogilby did not attempt to preserve the precise planimetric geometry of every bend in every road. Instead, he prioritized the information that mattered to the traveler:

  • the sequence of places;
  • the distance between them;
  • the direction of travel;
  • crossings and junctions;
  • hills and changes in elevation;
  • rivers and bridges;
  • ferries;
  • woods and other landmarks;
  • and connections to alternative routes.

This is one reason Ogilby’s maps remain fascinating to modern cartographers. They demonstrate that accuracy is always related to purpose.

A map designed for surveying property boundaries has different requirements from a map designed to guide a traveler. Ogilby understood this distinction remarkably well.

Measuring the Roads

Perhaps the greatest technical contribution of Britannia was its emphasis on measured distance.

Ogilby’s surveyors used a measuring wheel, called a way-wiser, to record distances along the roads.

The resulting maps were drawn at a scale of approximately one inch to one mile, or 1:63,360.

This may sound familiar to anyone interested in the later history of British cartography.

The one-inch-to-one-mile scale became extraordinarily important in Britain. It was subsequently adopted by the Ordnance Survey for its famous one-inch mapping. Ogilby’s work therefore anticipated a scale that would become deeply embedded in British topographic cartography.

There was another problem John Ogilby attempted to solve: what exactly constituted a mile?

Before standardized measurement became universal, local definitions of the mile could vary. A road map crossing several counties could therefore encounter different conventions for measuring distance.

Ogilby adopted the English statute mile of 1,760 yards, providing a consistent standard for his road measurements. This allowed routes crossing county boundaries to be represented using a common scale.

This was more than a technical convenience. It represented an important step toward treating the road network as a measurable national system rather than a collection of locally understood distances.

Mapping the Experience of Travel

Ogilby’s maps are particularly interesting because they capture something that many modern maps tend to suppress: the experience of moving through a landscape.

On a modern topographic map, a hill is normally represented by contours, shading, or spot elevations. Ogilby approached the problem differently. Hills are drawn in a way that helps the traveler understand the physical character of the route—whether the road climbs or descends.

Likewise, a bridge is not simply an abstract symbol. It is an important event in the journey.

A ferry represents a potential interruption.

A town represents a destination, stopping point, or junction.

A crossroads represents a decision.

The map therefore becomes almost narrative. It tells the traveler what happens next.

This is why Ogilby’s work can seem surprisingly modern. Contemporary transport maps often distort geographic space in order to preserve the structure of a journey. London’s Underground map is an obvious example. A subway map does not attempt to reproduce the precise geography of London; instead, it emphasizes the topology of the network.

John Ogilby was doing something conceptually similar three centuries earlier.

His maps say, in effect: Follow this route, and these are the places and features you will encounter.

Not Perfect Maps

Ogilby’s achievement should not be confused with perfect geographical accuracy.

The strip-map format inevitably introduced distortion. Roads were sometimes straightened, curves simplified, and geographic relationships altered to make the route fit the format. Modern research has shown that the maps contain numerous errors and distortions, although measured distance and named roadside features can often be used to reconstruct the underlying routes.

This is important when using Britannia as a historical source.

The maps should not simply be georeferenced and assumed to represent seventeenth-century geography with modern precision. They are functional maps, constructed around the needs of travelers and the limitations of engraving and printing.

But that does not diminish their historical value.

Quite the opposite.

The distortions reveal the priorities of the cartographer. Ogilby was not trying to create a perfect miniature of the landscape. He was trying to create a useful guide through it.

Britannia was not John Ogilby’s only major cartographic achievement.

His post-Great Fire surveying work contributed to one of the most important maps of Restoration London: A Large and Accurate Map of the City of London, produced with William Morgan and published in 1677, shortly after Ogilby’s death.

The map was constructed from twenty sheets and at a scale of approximately 1:1,200, with a detailed representation of the streets, lanes, alleys, courts, yards, churches, halls, and houses of the city.

This work demonstrates the other side of Ogilby’s cartographic abilities.

Britannia was primarily concerned with linear movement through the countryside.

The London survey was concerned with detailed urban space and property.

Together, the projects show a cartographer capable of working at radically different scales and for very different purposes.

The London map also illustrates the collaborative nature of seventeenth-century cartography. Ogilby worked with William Morgan, while parts of the engraving have been associated with the celebrated engraver Wenceslaus Hollar.

Ogilby’s Wider Geographic Interests

Ogilby’s geographic interests extended beyond Britain.

In 1670 he published Africa, a large geographical and descriptive work dealing with regions including Egypt, Barbary, Libya, West Africa, Ethiopia, and surrounding islands.

Like many seventeenth-century geographic publications, Africa was a compilation drawing upon earlier geographical knowledge, travel accounts, and other sources rather than a systematic survey conducted personally by Ogilby.

This distinction matters.

John Ogilby was not a field cartographer in the modern sense who personally surveyed every landscape appearing under his name. His importance lies partly in his ability to assemble, organize, publish, and visually communicate geographic information.

His career therefore sits at an interesting intersection between the traditional cosmographer and the emerging scientific surveyor.

Why John Ogilby Matters

John Ogilby’s greatest contribution to cartography was not simply that he produced attractive old maps.

His importance lies in the way he changed the purpose and structure of the road map.

Before Ogilby, roads appeared on maps, but there was a major difference between showing a road and systematically mapping a road network for travelers.

With Britannia, Ogilby made the road itself the primary cartographic object.

He measured it.

He standardized its distances.

Recorded what travelers would encounter.

He organized the information into sequential journeys.

And he produced the result at a consistent scale.

In this sense, Ogilby helped transform the road from a feature on a map into the subject of the map.

That is his enduring cartographic legacy.

The Legacy of Britannia

Ogilby’s influence extended well beyond 1675. His approach was repeatedly imitated, republished, and developed by later mapmakers. His measured road mapping also anticipated later British traditions of systematic road and topographic surveying.

Later editions and derivative works continued to circulate Ogilby’s road information, demonstrating the commercial and practical success of his concept.

For modern historians, Britannia is valuable in another way. The maps provide evidence about the seventeenth-century landscape and transportation network: roads, settlements, bridges, ferries, woods, hills, and the relationships between places.

A modern historian can compare Ogilby’s routes with contemporary roads and investigate which routes survived, which disappeared, and how Britain’s transportation geography changed over the centuries.

For cartographers, meanwhile, John Ogilby provides a fascinating lesson in purpose-driven cartographic design.

His maps deliberately sacrifice some geometric fidelity in order to improve usability.

That is not a failure of cartography.

It is cartographic design.

The Cartographer Who Mapped Journeys

John Ogilby died in London on 4 September 1676, only about a year after the publication of Britannia.

His life had taken him through an extraordinary succession of occupations: dancer, teacher, theater manager, government official, translator, publisher, printer, surveyor, geographer, and royal cosmographer.

Yet it is his final career that secured his place in the history of cartography.

Ogilby understood something fundamental about maps: people do not always need to know where everything is; sometimes they need to know how to get somewhere.

His Britannia answered that practical need with remarkable ingenuity.

The hundred strip maps are not conventional maps of England and Wales. They are maps of movement, sequence, distance, and experience. They represent geography from the perspective of the traveler rather than from the detached viewpoint of the atlas.

More than three centuries later, that idea remains remarkably relevant.

Every route planner, road atlas, transit diagram, and navigation application faces essentially the same cartographic problem Ogilby confronted in the seventeenth century:

How do you turn the complexity of geographic space into a form that helps someone successfully get from one place to another?

John Ogilby’s answer was the strip map.

And in 1675, it changed the way Britain traveled on paper.
